About the Role

The Principal Engineer - AI/ML Engineering will guide and accelerate the evolution of Hinge Health’s AI and related Infrastructure initiatives. As a market leader and a pioneer in applying AI/ML to drive member outcomes, Hinge Health has struck the right balance between aggressive technology and member safety and outcomes.  As Hinge Health pushes further in establishing itself as an AI thought leader in the healthcare space, this PE will help spearhead our efforts in transforming the industry and not just the domain we operate in. This evolution requires both operational and strategic thinking. Operationally, Hinge Health’s backend systems must continue to deliver world-class availability and data quality through hyper growth scaling in a high-compliance medical business. Strategically, a rapidly-increasing number of loosely-coupled product teams must remain empowered to use and apply the rapidly evolving ML and AI technologies in their products everyday.  

 

The AI Platform team is responsible for defining and building reusable AI platform components and guiding the build out of a Data Lake that meets the needs of teams interested in deploying AI solutions across the company. This is an opportunity for a Principal Engineer to be a leader  and work cross functionally to provide hands-on expertise in evaluating and evangelizing the use of Large Language Models and Generative AI technologies, integrating them into our production stack with high observability and upleveling our data quality efforts. The ideal candidate thrives in a highly collaborative, cross functional environment and is continually staying abreast of research and technological advancements in the industry.

 

In this role, you will glide between levels of abstraction to foster strong technical alignment, facilitate great technical decision making, and implement elegant solutions to the most complex and high-leverage technical problems. Your pragmatism, collaboration, thoughtfulness, and creative joy will shine through in every gesture, and disproportionately influence the technical culture of a growing engineering team.

 

What You'll Accomplish

Solving for cutting edge use cases in the healthcare domain ranging from improving our computer vision technology to personalizing our digital PT platform using AI/ML technologies

Build a healthcare compliant data lake for hinge health on AWS that meets the needs of our ever growing list of AI/ML solutions.

Leveraging extensive experience and thought leadership, lead the design and architecture of large-scale, company-wide platform projects.  

High and widespread confidence to make changes, based on alignment around well-defined principles (cf 12 factor) and clear visualizations (of both present and future states). 

Setup scalable production processes to identify drift of ML solutions and intervene at the right moment.

Work collaboratively across science and engineering teams to set up robust AI/ML compute infrastructure for training and evaluation, and real-time services for latency sensitive applications.

Play a defining role in growing the engineering talent, through mentorship and guidance, matching career goals to business objectives, whether from within the company or hiring external talent.

Author thought papers on the use of AI/ML in the healthcare space, present to company leadership as well as the engineering and product organizations and drive the technical vision in the AI/ML engineering space

Hinge Health Hybrid Model

We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days/week.

Qualificatons:
Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Physics 

12+ years of non-internship full time professional software development experience

4+ years of experience working on AI and ML related projects

4+ years of experience in designing and working in distributed systems based architecture, developing APIs and implementing scalable backend systems

Extensive experience in mentoring and leading junior team members, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and contributing to project planning and decision-making

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Computer Science,  Engineering, Mathematics or Physics

Expertise with the AI/ML ecosystems at the PhD level and equally with Product managers and executive leadership teams to ensure iterative progress in a fast-paced environment

Experience working with Healthcare/Personally Identifiable (PII) Data, and building healthcare compliant (HIPAA) data lakes

Strong expertise with distributed Architecture, with deep exposure to API design & versioning, domain-driven design, event-driven systems, and microservices that serve both web and mobile frontends

Experience with high Availability Systems, with strong point of view about telemetry, self-healing systems, buffers and queues, idempotency, disposability, and multi-tenancy

Strong ownership and self-driven, with a passion for making a difference in the healthcare field. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, working to identify opportunities and problems to solve, and match them with technology solutions from the industry, working effectively to address technical risks. At the same time, can work with senior leadership to outline the company’s strategic investments in AI initiatives

Compensation

This position will have an annual salary, plus equity and benefits. Please note the annual salary range is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location. The annual salary range for this position is $248,000 - $372,000.
