Role Summary:
The SMS Program Specialist supports the Safety Management System (SMS), related safety programs, safety related investigations and communications for the Maintenance and Engineering (M&E) at Horizon Air. As an individual contributor this role is responsible for developing solutions to improve maintenance safety reporting programs, tracking of corrective actions, and promotion of aviation safety.
Key Duties:
Take initiative to develop solutions to complex problems like synchronizing formal and informal Line Operational Safety Audit programs across operating divisions.
Make recommendations to leadership to continuously improve safety reporting based on trends identified via the safety reporting system.
Apply understanding of airline safety and compliance standards to act as the focal for all Horizon Air Maintenance & Engineering (M&E) SMS issues; identify safety-related legal, regulatory, and statutory requirements to ensure compliance.
With limited direction from manager, work independently to collaborate with teams across all divisions of Horizon Air in support of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Safety Risk Management (SRM) associated with ineffective risk controls or new hazards.
Handle safety related investigations found through any of the input systems of Horizon Air’s Safety Management System (SMS). This includes coordination with ASAP, Quality Assurance, and all other reporting sources, both internal and external to Horizon Air, in accordance with SMS Manual procedures.
Influence and partner with multiple departments to coordinate cross-division safety analysis and review processes to ensure standardization and compliance; prepare and facilitate M&E Data Analysis Group (DAG) and Safety Review Board (SRB) meetings and provide input to the Executive Safety Review Board.
Communicate frequently with teams from all operating divisions to assess risk, coordinate maintenance safety reporting programs and track corrective actions.
Network with teams across all divisions of Horizon Air in support of maintenance safety investigations including events that require Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Safety Transportation Board (NSTB) reporting per 49 CFR 830.
Represent the Horizon Safety team by attending regular meetings supporting safety across Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air and Horizon M&E.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills:
Required
2 years of experience in an airline operational role with exposure to safety programs and procedures.
Bachelor’s degree or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
A robust understanding of airline safety and compliance standards.
Excellent skills in problem-solving and critical thinking with the ability to understand the root causes of issues and to resolve them in a thorough manner.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication (e.g., verbal, written, presentation) skills, with the ability to provide insights, recommendations and create collaborative relationships to solve complex challenges that drive outcomes in the best interest of the company.
Detailed oriented and highly organized, with the ability to execute multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment where flexibility is key.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule based on business needs.
Strong analytical skills.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum age of 18.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Preferred
Experience complying with 14 CFR §5 Safety Management System.
Experience in aircraft maintenance.
Airframe and Powerplant certificate.
Experience with query and report writing tools (Tableau).
Regulatory experience and knowledge of 14 CFR Parts 43 and 121.

Salary Range:
$57,500 --- $86,200 / year
Salary Details:
Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
