Job Description
We are seeking an experienced SQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team in Columbus, OH. This role requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in managing SQL Server environments, and the ability to function as both a Production and Development Database Administrator. The ideal candidate will have significant experience with SQL Server 2014 or later, and a proven track record in managing high-availability database configurations, performance tuning, and automation.
Essential Activities and Responsibilities
Database Administration: Function as both a Production and Development Database Administrator. Perform specialized technical job functions with minimal supervision while leveraging experience and broad judgment.
Installation & Configuration: Install, configure, upgrade, and patch custom-built and vendor-supplied database applications and third-party software. Manage high-availability features such as clusters, availability groups, mirroring, and replication.
Database Maintenance: Perform maintenance tasks including index/statistics maintenance, space allocations, backups, and restores. Collaborate with developers and users on data archiving/purging. Develop automation scripts and processes to streamline administrative tasks.
Security & Integrity: Ensure database security and integrity are maintained. Define, implement, and manage security roles and permissions for applications, modules, and database users.
Performance Monitoring: Focus on database availability and uptime. Monitor usage and performance, and take necessary actions to improve performance through index management, SQL statement optimization, space allocations, and server/database configurations.
Consultation & Collaboration: Consult with developers and users to define data requirements, data load needs, database standards, and migration procedures. Work with Server, Storage, and Networking teams for resource needs. Interface with NOC and Help Desk teams for problem resolution and production issue analysis.
On-Call Support: Participate in the team on-call rotation, share knowledge, and provide mentorship and support to other database administrators. Carry out additional duties as assigned by management.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Experience: 10+ years of managing SQL Server environments with a minimum of 5-7 years in an administrative role with SQL Server 2014 or later.
Technical Skills: High proficiency in SQL, T-SQL, and PowerShell. At least 3 years of experience with ETL package development and maintenance using SSIS.
Database Management: Experience in installing, configuring, and upgrading database software, including high-availability configurations. Skilled in creating, updating, optimizing, and troubleshooting stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, and constraints.
Troubleshooting: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve job failures, performance issues, blocking/deadlocking, connectivity, and security issues.
Performance Tuning: Proficient in optimizing database workloads using tools such as Profiler, Extended Events, and DMVs. Experience with Solarwinds DPA is preferred.
Operating Systems: Good working knowledge of Windows Server operating systems (2012/2016/2019).
Backup & Recovery: Strong knowledge of backups, restores, and recovery models.
Cloud Platforms: Solid understanding of Amazon Web Services (AWS), including RDS, EC2, and S3.
Additional Skills: Familiarity with other SQL/NoSQL databases such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, etc., is a plus. Experience with enterprise information security, user accounts, database security management, source control, and change control processes and tools.
Soft Skills: Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, be accountable, and communicate effectively. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
