DPP is seeking a Senior Network Engineer for an opportunity in Des Moines, Iowa.

Work arrangement:

Hybrid: Some onsite work required. Standard hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with potential after-hours work likely

W2 position; 12 months

Local, regional candidates preferred

Position description:

This senior-level position supports the Department of Management’s DOIT computer networking responsibilities by managing firewalls, secure communications, network monitoring, and providing consulting and architecture services for network infrastructure.

The Senior Network Engineer will support the Department of Management (DOM) and Division of Information Technology (DOIT) by managing and optimizing the organization’s enterprise networking environment.

This senior-level role is critical in maintaining secure communications, network monitoring, and offering both consulting and architecture services for network infrastructure.

The position involves operational support for routers, switches, and firewalls, along with assessing and improving network infrastructure across various executive branch agencies.

Responsibilities and duties:

Operational support: Manage routers, switches, and firewalls to ensure security, performance, capacity, and availability of services.

Network configuration and management: Configure and maintain security network infrastructure in accordance with security standards and best practices.

Network security: Manage networks and systems to prevent unauthorized access while ensuring efficient transmission.

Perform log management and monitoring.

Firewall management: Plan, schedule, and implement access through firewalls in line with security standards and best practices.

Incident/Change management: Adhere to defined incidents/change management processes.

Collaboration: Communicate regularly with other technical teams and business owners.

Customer support: Work with customers to develop testing and implementation schedules as needed.

Documentation: Maintain and update technical documentation of the environment. 

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Network fundamentals: Strong knowledge of network switching, routing, IP addressing, and internet connectivity (10+ years)

Technical support: Senior-level technical support experience in a complex enterprise networking environment, including analytical and problem-solving skills (10+ years)

IP networking: Thorough working knowledge of IP networking (10+ years)

Security and firewall administration: Experience with security and firewall administration, including data network implementation (10+ years)

Advanced diagnostics: Experience with advanced diagnostics equipment and tools, routing protocols, network management tools, remote access, Ethernet, and WAN technologies (7+ years)

Specific technologies: Experience with F5 and Visio (2+ years)

Cloud technologies: Experience with cloud networking, particularly AWS and Azure (1+ years)

Highly desired KSAs:

Unix scripting: Skills in Unix scription languages such as Perl, Bash, TCL, and cURL

VMware: Experience with VMware implementation and administration

Qualification insights:

Top priorities: Emphasis on network architecture and firewall management.

Key technologies: Predominantly a Cisco environment with some Palo Alto gear and F5.

Cloud technologies: Ideal candidates will have skills in AWS and Azure cloud networking.

Scripting and VMware: Not required but beneficial; can be learned on the job.

Team collaboration: Will work closely with the network team.

Current challenges: Maintaining system uptime, learning the environment, and potentially performing assessments and recommendations.

Upcoming projects: No specific major projects planned.
